Approximately half of the plastic waste produced in Europe is exported, and following the stop by China, the new destination for the rubbish is Vietnam.

A team of researchers from the University of Utrecht collaborated with researchers from Vietnam to study the recycling process of plastic from Europe in the Minh Khai Craft Village, Vietnam’s main recycling centre.

The investigation revealed that waste is not recycled and is becoming a problem for the locals. The local community lives surrounded by toxic fumes generated by melted plastic. It was also found that 7 million litres of toxic waste water are discharged into the village waterways.

In conclusion, the researchers agreed that local communities bear the brunt of environmental pollution, with attendant health consequences.
