In an open letter addressed to the European Union, industry and environmentalists called for mandatory separate collection of household waste, so that the recycling targets set by the European Union could be achieved. The aim is to avoid incineration or landfill.

For while this practice is the norm for some, in fact, not everywhere in the EU is there a formal obligation or a structured paper, metal and plastic collection programme.

Among the organisations involved are Zero Weste Europe, Client Earth and European Environmental Bureau.

On 14 February, the European Parliament’s Environment Committee will be called upon to vote on the proposal. If the text passes the Environment Committee’s negotiation, the plenary will finally deal with it in March or April.
