A petition signed by around 180,000 people called for an EU ban on the export of plastic waste.

The initiative came during the dialogue between the EU Commission, the EU Parliament and the EU Council, meeting to negotiate the regulation on the cross-border trade in waste.

In general, the EU produces more waste than it can handle and generates a lot of non-recyclable plastic waste which it exports to other countries. Last year alone, more than one million tonnes of plastic waste were exported around the world, 51% of which ended up in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. While 30% went to Turkey.

The demand made is to stop exporting plastics to non-EU countries and to find a way to responsibly manage and dispose of plastic waste in the member states.
