A Guidehouse report forecasts Europe could generate 111 bcm of biomethane by 2040. This renewable gas is key to Europe’s decarbonization efforts, targeting 35 bcm production by 2030.

The European Commission aims for a 90% GHG reduction by 2040, with biomethane crucial to this goal. The analysis predicts 75 bcm from anaerobic digestion and 37 bcm from thermal gasification by 2040.

Leading in biodigestion potential are France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and Poland, sourcing mainly from crops, manure, and residues. Thermoconversion, predominantly from Sweden, Germany, Spain, UK, and France, depends 85% on wood waste and organic residues. The statement updates the 2022 Gas for Climate study, estimating 44 bcm by 2030 and 165 bcm by 2050.

It highlights innovative technologies like hydrothermal gasification and biomethanation to sustainably boost biomethane output, with pilot projects underway in Europe.
