Global maritime transportation continues to cause significant damage to the climate, oceans, and human health, while the United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO), the international community, and the maritime sector continue to inadequately address these issues.

This is revealed in a study commissioned by the European environmental organizations’ association for the protection of seas, called ‘Seas At Risk,’ titled “The state of shipping & oceans,” which denounces the “harmful impact of the maritime industry.” The study was published on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), the most important international legal text designed to address the environmental impact of international maritime transportation. The study is released as governments from around the world gather at the IMO in London to agree on a new climate strategy for maritime transportation.
