June 15 is UK “National Clean Air Day” and the government is having a consultation on “tackling nitrogen dioxide in our towns and cities”. But that’s not enough, in fact, air pollution is a problem in both rural and urban areas. In 63% of special areas of conservation, UK’s best wildlife sites, nitrogen levels are already too high. This pollution has consequences for animals, wild fungi and plants for foods. This is a problem for all of us, in fact biodiversity is fundamental for our health, our society and our economy. That’s the reason why measures to reduce nitrogen and cut air pollution need to be extended all across the country, not only in urban areas. Better green spaces, cycling routes and public transport are the solution to reduce toxic air.
