beer

Brewers’ spent grain (BSG), the primary waste product from beer production, is increasingly recognized for its potential as a sustainable resource. For every liter of beer produced, approximately 200 grams of BSG are generated, leading to a global annual output of around 37 million tonnes. Traditionally, about 70% of BSG is utilized as cattle feed, while 10% is transformed into biogas, with the remainder often ending up in landfills, where it contributes to methane emissions.

BSG: from waste to nutritious food ingredients

BSG is packed with nutrients, including protein and fiber, making it a valuable resource for various alternative applications. Start-ups such as Upgrain, Agrain, and BiaSol are working to process BSG into human-grade protein and fiber, which are already being incorporated into products like baked goods, granola, plant-based meats, and even coffee. Upgrain’s system, which has received approval from the US FDA and the European Food Safety Authority, allows breweries to convert BSG on-site, providing a new protein source for food manufacturers.

BSG: trasforming into eco-friendly materials for varius industries

The potential of BSG goes beyond food applications. Companies like Arda Biomaterials are transforming it into vegan leather, offering a more sustainable alternative to traditional animal-based materials. The color of Arda’s material varies depending on the type of beer used and is currently being tested in the fashion and automotive sectors. Additionally, BSG is being investigated for its potential uses in cosmetics, paper, and even construction materials, thanks to its antioxidant properties and chemical makeup.

Overcoming challenges in utilizing Brewers’ Spent Grain

Despite these promising applications, there are still challenges to overcome. BSG has a short shelf life due to its high moisture content, which complicates its transportation and storage. To tackle this issue, researchers are developing better preservation techniques and more energy-efficient extraction methods. As the demand for sustainable materials and proteins continues to rise, brewers’ spent grain could become a significant resource, helping to reduce waste and provide innovative solutions across various industries.
