Torrential rain over the weekend in the southeastern U.S. led to severe flooding, resulting in at least 10 fatalities. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear confirmed nine deaths in his state, while a man in Georgia lost his life after being struck by a fallen tree. The intense rainfall submerged roads and homes, necessitating the rescue of around 1,000 individuals from rising waters. Several states, including Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina, issued storm-related alerts.

Kentucky flooding causes fatalities and destruction, federal aid approved

In Kentucky, rainfall reached up to 6 inches (15 cm), causing rivers to swell quickly, trapping vehicles and leading to numerous road closures. Among the deceased in Kentucky were a mother and her 7-year-old child, as well as a 73-year-old man. Governor Beshear has requested federal disaster assistance, which President Trump approved, enabling FEMA to manage relief operations.

Storms cause power outages, flooding, and evacuations

The storms resulted in significant power outages, impacting hundreds of thousands of homes, although the numbers had begun to decline by Monday. In Obion County, Tennessee, a levee breach caused flooding in the town of Rives, leading to evacuations. West Virginia also declared a state of emergency, with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem expressing support for the affected regions.

Storm brings snow to Canada, record cold to central US

The storm system is now bringing heavy snowfall to parts of Canada, while the National Weather Service warns of potentially record-breaking cold and hazardous wind chills for the central U.S. this week. This extreme weather follows earlier damage from Hurricane Helene in September, with many residents still in the process of recovering from previous flooding.
