In an effort to improve energy security, the UK and the Netherlands aim to construct a new power line that could deliver green electricity to 1.8 million homes.

The “world’s largest multi-use electricity power line” is what officials refer to as the LionLink connection under the North Sea.

When it becomes “operational by the early 2030s”, it will link the two nations to one another as well as to offshore wind turbines in the North Sea.

The international electrical connection will be just the second of its sort in the world, since Germany and Denmark created the first.

The British government declared it to be “the largest of its kind in terms of capacity anywhere in the world” since it will be able to carry more than four times as much energy as its predecessor (1.8GW vs. 0.4GW).

The project is being developed by Dutch electrical network operator TenneT and the National Grid of Great Britain.

According to ministers, the connection will be able to transport enough excess energy between the nations to power Birmingham and Manchester jointly.

The “historic deal” announced on Monday, according to Energy Secretary Grant Shapps, strengthens the UK’s energy security and sends a «clear message to Putin’s Russia that the days of his dominance over the world’s power markets are well and truly over».
