Just Stop Oil was created to put pressure on the UK government to stop new and existing fossil fuel deals. It is a coalition of different groups inspired by organisers from Insulate Britain and Extinction Rebellion.

In recent weeks the supporters of the group have glued themselves to many and major frames of famous paintings across cultural institutions in the UK, from the National Gallery in London to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.

They have attached themselves to works such as van Gogh’s Peach Trees in Blossom (1889) and J. M. W. Turner’s Thomson’s Aeolian Harp (1809) while the words “No New Oil” was spray-painted under the various paintings.

The activists’s purpose is to grab the attention of leaders in the art world and to alert the public to the dangers of governments initiating new oil and gas projects as the climate crisis spirals.
