A Griffith University study suggests future climate change could disrupt the krill-heavy diet of southern hemisphere humpback whales.

Dr. Jasmin Groß, conducting the research at Griffith’s Centre for Planetary Health and Food Security, analyzed blubber and skin samples from five humpback whale populations, comparing them with their primary prey, Antarctic krill.

Despite distinct biochemical differences, all tested whale populations predominantly consumed Antarctic krill. This provided them with a high-fat diet suited to their migratory lifestyle.providing a high-fat diet suited for their migratory lifestyle.
