The Institute for Environmental Studies in the Netherlands conducted a study about global warming and discovered that some city of the world by the end of the century will be 8 Celsius degrees warmer. For this work the researchers used data from the world’s 1692 largest cities for the period 1950 to 2015.
This projection is based on the case the emissions will grow constantly throughout the 21st century. Francisco Estrada, co-author of the study, said “The top 5% [of cities by population] could see increases in temperatures of about 8C and larger”. This team of researchers combined different projections of global warming with the UHI effect (Urban heat island) and potential harms, to estimate the possibile future warming of the cities. Towns are only about 1% of world’s surface but they provide about 80% of GDP and is responsible for almost the 78% of energy consumed all around the world. Large cities creare more than 60% of global carbon dioxide emissions form burning coal, oil and gas for fuel, the researchers said.
