Government of Dubai announced an ambitious plan to deal with their trash, by building the world’s largest waste-to-energy plant. The facility will handle, according to the plan, two million tons of solid waste yearly – around 60% of the trash produced by Dubai in a year – and will generate power for 120,000 homes. It is almost 2% of Dubai’s annual electricity consumption.
The plant will be build on five acres of land. The project, with the construction that will start in a few months, will see the involvement of Switzerland technology company Hitachi Zosen Inova and Belgian construction company BESIX on the project.
The system could be operating before 2020, according to Dubai Municipality director general Hussain Nasser Lootah, the year when Dubai will be hosting World Expo.
